Brooklyn Heights doesn't let a building coast on being new. At 138 Joralemon Street, the entry does the convincing: an ornate iron gate, checkerboard marble in black and deep green, a floating stair that throws its own scrollwork shadow across the wall behind it. None of it is decoration borrowed from another era. It's what a neighborhood with this much memory actually asks for. Three residences sit above, quieter than the entrance but no less considered.
